Registration is open for Walter Johnson Crew’s Summer Learn-to-Row (LTR) program! If you’ve ever wondered just what rowing is and what the crew team does, now’s your chance to check it out. Our week-long Learn-To-Row (LTR) camps are the perfect way to learn the basics about our team and the athletic program that ESPN ranks as the most physically demanding high school sport around. Not sure if you’re in shape for that? All types of athletic experience are welcome! And if you’re involved in another sport or club during the school year, but are curious about crew, the summer LTR program is the perfect way to get your feet wet (pun intended)! You can try it out without missing out on other extracurriculars or worrying about getting your homework done. WJ Crew is a coed competitive team that competes in races through out the fall and spring. It’s a great Walter Johnson tradition that is getting better all the time. In recent years we’ve had success at races in our region as well as nationally. Despite our medals, more than 90% of our athletes join the team without ever having sat in a boat or rowed a single stroke! Want to know even more about the team? See our FAQ page. The summer LTR program is open to older middle school students (rising 8th and 9th-graders) and to all current high school students, regardless of which school you attend. The week-long camp will expose you to all the fundamentals of rowing, including
- Proper technique on the water
- Rowing machine experience
- Practice handling equipment
- Sportsmanship and competitiveness.
Week long sessions will run from 4 to 6:30 pm each day at the WJ Crew boathouse in Bladensburg Waterfront Park, about a half-hour drive from Walter Johnson.
- Monday, June 26th through Friday, June 30th, 2017
- Monday, August 7th through Friday, August 11th, 2017
Attend either one or both weeks of camp for $200 per student and if you decide to row for WJ Crew in the fall, you’ll receive a credit against your fall registration fees. The team will help arrange carpools for those who need them. No special equipment is required to participate in the camps. However, participants should avoid baggy shorts and t-shirts. Instead choose snug-fitting clothes that won’t get caught in the equipment when you row, and bring plenty of water. Sun protection is important when you’re on the water! Plan on wearing a baseball hat or something similar, sunglasses and sunscreen.
