Crew is one of the few competitive sports that top athletes start in high school and college – not primary school. While skill increases with time, rowers have to be big enough to row. Athletes and those who want to become more athletic can all enjoy learning to row, learning the discipline of competition, and enjoy the thrill of success and winning. NBC did a nice video about crew for the Olympics check it out NBC Rowing 101!
WJ crew is a highly competitive team that fields boats that range from “Learning” to “Nationally competitive.” Crew does take a lot of time, but over the 14 years of the team, many athletes have mixed AP classes, APEX, music, and more with crew. Some athletes have even done more than one sport at WJ.
The varsity season starts August 28th and the Novice season (the first year of high school rowing) starts September 19th with a learn to row session (September 19-24). The fall season runs till November and is followed immediately by the winter conditioning season. Spring is the sprint racing season and rowers will take on the faster, more competitive, shorter races.
To get more information from our coaches – join our email list Sign up form (please give us a parent email we find most youth don’t answer their emails).
Come by our table at the fall picnic – we will be next to the boat!
