The Walter Johnson Crew Club, a high school student rowing club in Bethesda Maryland
We had a successful day on the water with many boats taking home medals. On the women's side, the 2V4+ took home Gold, with our B entry close behind. The women's Varsity 8+ will look to close the distance to BCC and Whitman at WMIRA, but still was able to lock up the bronze this weekend. The highlights of the day came when the Women's Novice 8+ took first in their event for what I believe were their first Gold medals as WJ rowers!
On the men's side we had difficulty keeping up with BCC, Whitman and Dematha boats in the 8s. They are some of the fastest programs in the area and the country - and have more rowers than us, so the effort was admirable from our eights. In the fours, the Men's Novice advanced to the Final. The Men's 2V4+ took home gold after a challenging final, eventually pulling a way to a convincing victory. The Men's V4+ stumbled out of the blocks and couldn't overcome a strong race from our boathouse neighbors, Dematha. They took home 2nd place in challenging conditions, but look to lay down better pieces at WMIRA Championships. Special thanks also goes out to everyone who helped with the plant sale over the weekend - especially our resident plant-sale queen, Nicole Oxendine. She has been rocking this fundraiser for the past 2 years, so please thank her the next time you see her. One last announcement - Today, Senior Ben Koenig knocked another 3.9 seconds off of his own Team Record for Men's 2KM pulling a 6:24.1. He has now dropped 7.9 seconds total off of the record.
