[singlepic id=730 w= h= float=none]The Washington Post today named the Walter Johnson Crew lightweight 4+ boat one of only five area high school “Best Boats” in its spring All Met section. It also named Katie Porter, a WJ Crew graduating Senior, as an Honorable Mention for their Girls “First Team”.
Even though four of them are sophomores in a category where upperclassmen are prevalent, the WJ Boys Lightweight Four dominated local competition this season. They started their streak by winning gold medals at Maryland High School Rowing Championship (“States”) and WMIRA Championships, making the finals at the prestigious Stotesbury Cup and the SRAA National Championship Regatta (“Nationals”), and capping off the season with a silver medal at NSRA Championships.
Katie Porter is truly a rowing force to be reckoned with. In her four years with WJ Crew, she has:
- Held the top rowing machine score three years running
- Rowed in boats that have won gold at the WMIRA regional championships
- Taken home medals at the Maryland States
- Made the semifinals and finals at the Stotesbury Cup and SRAA Nationals.
All-in-all Katie has been a key factor in the transition on the WJ Crew girls’ team from racing only in four-person boats to being competitive in eight-person boats. This fall Katie will be rowing at the University of Tennessee on a full scholarship.
Congratulations to Katie, as well as to Simon Nathans, Sam Lupo, Lukas Flores, Skander Boudabbous, and Harris Karlin!
